Brief Biography (English)

Professor Zaccheaus Awortu Jeremiah is a Haematology and Blood Transfusion Science Professor at the Rivers State University, Port Harcourt, Nigeria. He obtained the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree on the 21st of December 2006 and other postgraduate degrees from the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (now Rivers State University), all in the discipline of haematology and BTS.  He obtained the academic Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath) London in 2013, a Fellow of the Institute of Biomedical Science (FIBMS) London in 2014, and a Fellow of the West African Postgraduate College of Medical Laboratory Science (FWAPCMLS) in 2020. He served as the regional foundation Dean of the Haematology Faculty at the West African Postgraduate College of Medical Laboratory Science for two tenures. (2020-2024)

He joined the Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island, as a Lecturer 1 in 2007 and rose to the rank of a Professor of Haematology and Blood Transfusion Science on the 1st October 2014 in the same University. He delivered his inaugural lecture titled THE ORACLE IN THE BLOOD on the 13th of December, 2017. His research interest encompasses the following areas: general haematology, immunohematology, infectious diseases and coagulation.

Prof Jeremiah’s research output is remarkable. His 148 peer-reviewed publications reflect his deep understanding of haematological disorders, blood safety, and transfusion medicine. His work on transfusion transmissible infectious diseases, abnormal haemoglobin variants, and iron deficiency among blood donors has significantly impacted healthcare practices and patient outcomes.

He has a significant number of citations of 2106 (two thousand and sixty-three), reflecting the impact of his research work. His h-index, which measures both the productivity and citation impact of his publications, stands at 25, with an i10-index of 42, indicating that at least 42 of his papers have been cited 10 times or more

He has served as an international mentor in the UNDP and RCPath LabSkill Africa programmes in the East African Countries of Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, and Uganda. He has supervised and graduated over fifteen PhD students in Haematology and BTS from several Universities in Nigeria.

He is the Editor-in-Chief of two journals: African Journal of Laboratory Haematology and Transfusion Science(AJLHTS) and Annals of Medical Laboratory Science (AMLS). Both of which are indexed in AJOL, Crossref and other. He is also an editor of prestigious journals like SANAMED, Online Journal of Blood Diseases etc

Prof Jeremiah is the founding President of the Haematology and Blood Transfusion Scientists Society of Nigeria (HBTSSN) and chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Fellowship of Christian Medical Laboratory Professionals (FCMLP), Nigeria. He is a Fellow of the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (FAMLSN).
