Brief Biography (English)

After completing his PhD in Organic Chemistry at the University of Cape Town (UCT) in 1995, Prof Anwar Jardine undertook postdoctoral research in the fields of Drug Discovery and Medicinal Chemistry. He started out at University of Cape Town (UCT) Medical School, followed by GlaxoSmithkline R&D in Stevenage (United Kingdom) and later at Harvard Medical School, USA.

In 1999, he left academia and joined Johnson Matthey Pharma Outsourcing Division, USA.  After spending three years working in the pharmaceutical industry, he was offered a Senior Research Scientist position at Gillette Advanced Technology Centre, USA. Being part of a FMCG company, my research was focused on personal care product innovation.

Prof Jardine returned to South Africa in 2004 to start a career in academia, first at the University of Stellenbosch and then later at the University of Cape Town. He become passionate about adding value to biomass waste in the context of Green Chemistry. Green Chemistry now over arches my entire approach to teaching, synthesis, specifically biopolymer valorisation using food waste as a source.  He also serve as technical consultant for Unilever.
