Brief Biography (English)

Dr Mahmoud Ibrahim Mahmoud is a Senior Environmental Scientist (remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems-GIS applications specialist) with the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), Abuja, since 2008. Over the years he developed skills and competencies in conceptualizing and implementing operational geoinformation processes for oil spill response and management in Nigeria. His concepts have been used to develop platforms such as the oil spill monitor in Nigeria (https://oilspillmonitor.ng). With hands-on skills in geoinformation sciences, he has participated in and managed GIS and remote sensing products such as Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) maps; oil spill trajectory modeling, and underground storage tank-farms databases as a tool for oil spill management. He recently completed his first postdoctoral research fellowship position as a geospatial information modeling scientist with the Centre for Tropical Environmental and Sustainability Science (TESS) at James Cook University (JCU), Australia (2016-2018). As a researcher at JCU-Cairns, his research focused on assessing the impacts human-driven land-cover change and infrastructure development pose to African tropical forests, biodiversity, and wildlife using geospatial information technologies (with published works). Dr Ibrahim Mahmoud is interested in spatial land-use planning, urban ecology, coastal environmental changes in the Atlantic, the conservation of natural ecosystems for sustainable development, oil spill sciences, using geodata/technologies (remote sensing) in establishing and monitoring the linkages between Earth Observation Data and Sustainable Development Goals as well as to learn how to professionally Translate Remote Sensing data into Sustainable Development Indicators (TRISDI) for monitoring development near real-time and reliably. He acquired his PhD in Climate Change and Land-Use with a focus on urban science and climate change impacts from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, Ghana (2013-2016). He obtained his MSc in Geoinformation Science and Earth Observation, Applied Earth Sciences/Disaster Geoinformation Management-DIGM, with a focus on advanced information extraction from paper maps from ITC, University of Twente, Enschede, The Netherlands (2010-2012). He has a background in Geography and Remote Sensing Applications from the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Nigeria, and the Nigeria Certificate in Education, a teaching qualification status in Computer Science and Geography from the Federal College of Education, Zaria.
