Dr Marion Holmes has worked and lived on a game farm since 1994. Her work with the smaller wild cat species of Southern Africa was formalised in 2004 with the establishment of the non-profit Cat Conservation Trust. Dr Holmes' tertiary focus has been on aquatic ecosystems which are specialising in freshwater diatoms. She is currently busy with her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Botany/Plant Biology at Nelson Mandela University, her PhD focuses on the diatoms in the eastern Karoo with reference to them as bioindicators of, not only fountains but also underground water quality.
She is a part of the AEON team conducting baseline research for the Karoo Shale Gas Project. The working title for this project is ‘Diatoms as an ‘early warning’ monitoring tool for surface and groundwater contamination: towards a water baseline for the Karoo”.
