Mr Edwin Hlangwani is a lecturer and researcher at the University of Johannesburg. He holds an MSc in Biotechnology and is currently pursuing a PhD in Biotechnology, also at the University of Johannesburg. His research focuses on creating a nexus between emerging technologies and indigenous knowledge systems to develop, optimize, and mobilize sustainable food systems in rural and semi-urban areas. This includes the application of cutting-edge technologies such as machine learning, genetic engineering, next-generation sequencing, and NFC-tagged packaging to develop new, innovative, and sustainable food products. One example of such a product is a fortified, low-alcohol marula fruit beer efficiently produced at low temperatures.
