Dr Thomas Hilton completed his undergraduate training at the University of Cape Town in 2005. He then performed his internship, community service and medical officer training at Ngwelezana Hospital on the North Coast of KwaZulu-Natal. During this time Dr Hilton successfully completed diplomas in Anaesthesia (DA) and Primary Emergency Care (DipPEC).
In 2010 he worked abroad at the University Hospital Galway, Ireland before returning to the University of Cape Town, and both Groote Schuur Hospital and Red Cross Childrens hospital, to complete an Orthopaedic specialisation in Orthopaedic Surgery in January 2016.
Dr Hilton then finished two fellowships in Orthopaedic Oncology and Joint Reconstruction Surgery. His first fellowship was performed in Cape Town at Life Vincent Pallotti Life Orthopaedic Hospital, Red Cross Childrens hospital and Groote Schuur Hospital under Dr Keith Hosking. The second was performed in the United Kingdom at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, in Stanmore, London.
Dr Hilton runs the Orthopaedic Oncology unit at Groote Schuur and Red Cross Childrens hospital and has a growing academic private practice. His private practice includes Life Vincent Pallotti, Netcare Christiaan Barnard and Busamed Paardevlei hospitals. His work encompasses many aspects, from primary joint replacement to limb reconstruction after sarcoma resection or failed arthroplasty, salvage of infected prostheses, and management of amputees. A large aspect of his practice includes innovation and implant design alongside implant companies in order to find management strategies for complex problems that are thought not to have solutions. His interests include research and setting up of registries and databases. Specifically the South African Sarcoma Registry. Dr Hilton lives with his wife and two daughters in the City Bowl and his interests outside medicine include cooking and DIY.
