Brief Biography (English) Dr Kobus Herbst is a faculty member and the Director Population Science at the Africa Health Research Institute. He is the Director of the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation-funded South African Population Research Infrastructure Network (SAPRIN). SAPRIN is hosted by the South African Medical Research Council and funds the population and health surveillance at seven nodes (Agincourt, Mpumalanga; DIMAMO Limpopo, AHRI rural KZN, GRT-INSPIRED Gauteng, C-SHARP WC, USINGA urban KZN, BAMMISHO peri-urban North West).
Dr Herbst chairs the interim Steering Committee of the Africa Population Cohort Consortium. He is a member of the Scientific Steering Committee of the International Health Cohort Consortium (IHCC) and the H3Africa Data and Biosample Access Committee. His passion is information and how information management contributes to the scientific process, particularly, the establishment of data repositories to curate datasets and promote the secondary use of research study data. To this end, he established the INDEPTH data repository in 2013 containing longitudinal demographic and cause specific mortality data of more than 3 million individuals from 25 demographic surveillance sites in lower and middle-income countries. This work is extended in a collaborative project with researchers at LSHTM to establish a repository of longitudinal population-based HIV sero-surveillance data from 10 sites in Africa (the Alpha network).

Je suis le directeur du Réseau sud-africain d'infrastructures de recherche sur la population (SAPRIN), financé par le Département des sciences, de la technologie et de l'innovation. SAPRIN est hébergé par le Conseil sud-africain de la recherche médicale et finance la surveillance de la population et de la santé à sept nœuds (Agincourt, Mpumalanga ; DIMAMO Limpopo, AHRI rural KZN, GRT-INSPIRED Gauteng, C-SHARP WC, USINGA urban KZN, BAMMISHO périurbain Nord-Ouest). Je préside le comité directeur intérimaire du Consortium de la cohorte de population africaine. Je suis membre du comité directeur scientifique de l'International Health Cohort Consortium (IHCC) et du comité d'accès aux données et aux échantillons biologiques de H3Africa. Ma passion est l'information et la manière dont la gestion de l'information contribue au processus scientifique, en particulier la création de référentiels de données pour conserver des ensembles de données et promouvoir l'utilisation secondaire des données des études de recherche. À cette fin, j'ai créé le référentiel de données INDEPTH en 2013 contenant des données démographiques longitudinales et des données de mortalité par cause spécifique de plus de 3 millions d'individus provenant de 25 sites de surveillance démographique dans des pays à revenu faible et intermédiaire. Ce travail est étendu dans le cadre d'un projet collaboratif avec des chercheurs du LSHTM visant à établir un référentiel de données longitudinales de sérosurveillance du VIH basées sur la population provenant de 10 sites en Afrique (le réseau Alpha).
