Prof Abubeker Hassen is an active professor, effective communicator, strategic thinker, well rounded and experienced professional with over 25 years in research and 17 years of lecturing in Ruminant Animal Nutrition, Forage & Pasture Science. Have a proven track record of securing substantial grant funding (more than R21 million) from local and international funding agencies as both the main applicant and a member of consortia. Successfully led team of researchers, completed numerous research projects on forage crop selection, mitigation of enteric methane emission from ruminant animals through dietary and rumen manipulation, and application of remotely sensed data and computer projects for prediction of forage and animal production. Supervised 26 M.Sc. and 20 PhD graduate students to completion, authored or co-authored more than 110 publications in peer-reviewed journals and honored in July 2024 with the Silver Medal (under research category) by the South African Society for Animal Science.
Dr Hassen holds a PhD in Agric (in Pasture Science) from University of Pretoria, South Africa; MSc Agric (in Animal Science) from Sokoine University of Agriculture, Tanzania and BSc Agric (Animal Science) from Alemaya University of Agriculture (now known as Haramaya University College of Agriculture), Ethiopia.
