Dr Elsie Hamadina is a Crop Scientist/Crop Physiologist with specialisation in hormonal and environmental regulation of crop growth, development and yield. She also has keen interest in stress physiology, postharvest physiology, precision agriculture and environmental impact assessment. She has 15 years of post-doctoral experience in university-level lecturing and 24 years of experience in field and laboratory research, excellent skills in field and laboratory experimentations, a good understanding of data analysis, including survival statistics. Her goal is to contribute to the reduction of hunger and poverty in Sub-Sahara Africa through the development of techniques that can increase, in a sustainable manner, the productivity of important crops. Her major professional achievements are: (1) The development of a framework for studying the phenomenon of dormancy in yam, and (2) the development of methods for preventing dormancy in invitro and soil grown yam tubers. These novel findings and others are published in international journals. In addition, Dr Hamadina has worked on other crops such as maize, passion fruit, tomato, rice, allanblackia and cassava. Apart from participation in professional international associations, she takes part in voluntary services and sprinting.
