Brief Biography (English)

An Environmental Scientist and a Chartered Public Relations Practitioner by profession. Currently an independent Sustainability and Environmental Scientist. PhD in Climate Change Learning within the industry environment, a Masters’ Degree in Environmental Management, a Bachelor of Science degree in Natural Science and a Bachelor of Technology degree in Public Relations Management and Communications. Was an employee at Eskom in various environmental roles, and for the past 25 years in a Senior Environmental Management role. Undertaken numerous Environmental Impact Assessments, developed and implemented an Environmental Management System, certified against ISO14001:2015, engaged with a range of stakeholders, including government authorities, developed and conducted numerous environmental training courses for all level of employees and for external service providers, as well as environmental performance monitoring and reporting against environmental key performance indicators. In his role at Eskom, achieved 4 consecutive years of zero environmental legal contraventions and 4 consecutive years as the number 1 Operating Unit (out of 9) on the Eskom Environmental Index. Was also the Special External Advisor in the Communications and Public Information Division of the UNEP since 1997. In this capacity, he has undertaken 35 international missions for the UNEP. He is one of the contributors to the UNEP 2002 GEO3 and AEO3 reports, as well as the Youth version of the AEO. He was also the editorial co-ordinator for the “Imvelo Yethu: The Youth version of the South Africa Environment Outlook 2006”. Has acted as a part-time consultant for the World Bank on four Climate Change-related projects from 2008 to 2011 in S.E. Asia. Lectures (part-time), the Environmental Engineering course in the undergraduate and postgraduate Engineering programme at the University of KwaZulu-Natal since 1999, and was a guest lecturer for two years, at the Rhodes University Investec Business School, “Leadership for Sustainability” for the MBA Programme. He is a Council member (for the second term since 2011) of the SACNASP. Since March 2019, he was appointed as a Council member of the National Forests Advisory Council and on the Committee for Sustainable Forest Management. Was the chair of the Environmental and Safety Advisory Committee of the PIESA for at least 10 years, and a current member of Study Committee C3 System Environment Performance of CIGRE.
