Brief Biography (English)

Wieland Gevers is an Emeritus Professor of Medical Biochemistry at the University of Cape Town (UCT), South Africa. He qualified in medicine at UCT in 1960 and was a Rhodes Scholar at the University of Oxford (1962-1966) under Sir Hans Krebs; and had a Helen Hay Whitney Foundation post-doc Fellowship at the Rockefeller University, New York (1966-1970) with Fritz Lipmann.

He was the Professor of Medical Biochemistry at Stellenbosch University (1971-1977), and a Professor of Medical Biochemistry at the University of Cape Town from 1978 to present. Prof Gevers was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor at UCT from 1992-1996; Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor at UCT from 1996-2002; Fellow of Royal Society of South Africa from 1983 and President 1987-1988.

He has been a Member of the Academy of Science of South Africa from 1995 and became the President of the Academy from 1998-2004. He was also the Executive Officer and General-Secretary, of the Academy.

Prof Gevers directed the Medical Research Council (MRC) Research Units, at the Universities of Stellenbosch and Cape Town, and established the Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine at UCT. His Honours include 3 hon. doctorates; Wellcome Gold Medal for Medical Research; Gold Medals, South African Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, SAMRC, Southern African Association for the Advancement of Science, and ASSAf.

He was inducted into the National Order of Mapungubwe in Silver in 2008. Prof Gevers is a Member of 3 science academies and Life Fellow, UCT. He was also a Member of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), from 2005; Gold Medal Lecturer in 2009; Hon DSc degrees Universities of Cape Town, Stellenbosch, and Port Elizabeth.
