Brief Biography (English)

Abebe Getahun is a Professor of Aquatic Biology at the Department of Zoological Sciences, Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia. He obtained his BSc in Biology and MSc in Zoology from Addis Ababa University, an MPhil and PhD in Ecology, Evolution, and Behaviour from a joint program of the American Museum of Natural History and the City University of New York, USA.

He is teaching undergraduate and postgraduate (MSc and PhD) courses and also involved in research projects. His research focus is on diversity, conservation, and utilization of aquatic organisms especially fishes. He has authored or co-authored over 70 articles in scientific journals and books. He has received several grants from different agencies for research purposes. He has served in academic administrations in various capacities at Addis Ababa University.

Prof Getahun has successfully organized and hosted the Pan African Fish and Fisheries Association (PAFFA) conference in 2008 in Addis Ababa and he was the President of the Association from 2008-2013. He is also the Regional Co-Chairman (Northeast Africa) for the wetlands International/IUCN SSC Freshwater Fish Specialist Group, from 2007 up to now. He has also organized several workshops in the field of fisheries and aquaculture and also participated in training and visits of over 35 countries worldwide. He is the founding member of the Ethiopian Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences Association (EFASA) and the Biological Society of Ethiopia.
