Brief Biography (English)

Dr Rebecca Garland is currently an Associate ProfessorUniversity of Pretoria. She was previously a Principal Researcher in the Climate and Air Quality Modelling Group at the Council for Scientific and Industrial research (CSIR), South Africa. She leads the air quality research in the group, which focuses on improving the understanding of air quality and atmospheric science, and impacts in southern Africa. The group's research includes emissions inventory development, photochemical air quality modelling, risk, vulnerability and impact assessment, evidence-based air quality management planning, and the linkages between air quality and climate change in a regional to urban scale. Dr Garland is on the Implementation Team to develop the African group on Atmospheric Sciences (ANGA) under IGAC, which is a newly formed Pan-African initiative focusing on uniting atmospheric expertise across Africa and fostering the next generation of atmospheric scientists (https://igacproject.org/working-groups/anga). She has been appointed as an Extraordinary Lecturer in the Department of Geography, Geoinformatics and Meteorology, at the University of Pretoria and as an Extraordinary Associate Professor in the Unit for Environmental Sciences and Management at North West University, Potchefstroom. She received her PhD from the University of Colorado, Boulder focusing on atmospheric science and was a postdoctoral fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz, Germany.
