Professor Sunita Facknath is a Professor in Sustainable Agriculture at the University of Mauritius, and a twice-over doctorate (she holds two PhDs, one from the UK and another from Mauritius). She was the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, at the University of Mauritius from 2015 to 2018.
In addition to Teaching, she is very active as a Researcher and Consultant. Her interests are in the field of Sustainable Agriculture, Organic Farming, Climate Change, Integrated Pest and Vector Management, Sustainable Aquaculture, Sustainable Forestry, Soil Biology, Agrochemicals, and Agrobiodiversity. Prof Facknath has researched a large number of environmentally-friendly, and sustainable technologies for crop health, using natural and/or non-chemical approaches that can be used in bio farming and organic production.
Over the past several years, she has been researching the impacts of climate change on agriculture, the risks and vulnerabilities of the agroecosystems, and the possible adaptation, coping and mitigation strategies.
Prof Facknath has a large number of Publications and has also undertaken a significant number of development projects and consultancies in Mauritius as well as for international agencies, e.g. United Nations Development Program (UNDP), European Union (EU), Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), African Union (AU), New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD), Southern African Development Community (SADC), Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Policy Analysis Network (FANRPAN).
She was the Founder Member of the Rotary Club of Ebene, and the Chairperson of its Projects Committee.
