Brief Biography (English)

Leana Esterhuyse spent the early part of her career practicing as a financial manager at several companies listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. She joined the University of South Africa (Unisa) as a senior lecturer in 2000. From mid-2008 to end 2010, She taught at the University of Pretoria (UP), before returning to Unisa at the beginning of 2011. She has always taught management accounting and finance on the postgraduate stream for those students aiming to become chartered accountants themselves. After initially focusing primarily on teaching (and family responsibilities), her research career got kick-started when she received a grant to complete her PhD full time from 2014 - 2017. Since then, she has focused more on supervision of masters students and her own research projects.  Her primary research interests lie in corporate voluntary communications to stakeholders as a means to reduce information asymmetry, as well as its potential for impression management. She investigate two communication channels: 1) corporate investor relations web pages, and 2) annual (integrated) reports ('front' parts) as well as corporate social, environmental and governance responsibility (CSR/ESG/Sustainability) reports. She use mainly content analysis (manual or textual analysis software) for primary data gathering and financial and market data for secondary data. She prefer hypotheses testing with quantitative models, but recent work on human rights disclosures has been more interpretive.
