Brief Biography (English)

Dr Surina Esterhuyse is a researcher in the Centre for Environmental Management at the University of the Free State (UFS). She specialises on minimising the environmental impact of unconventional oil and gas extraction on specifically groundwater resources, via regulation and other tools. She led the project on the development of the interactive vulnerability map and monitoring framework for unconventional oil and gas for the South African Water Research Commission (WRC). She was also a co-author on the Strategic Environmental Assessment on Shale Gas Development in South Africa and co-edited the book Hydraulic Fracturing in the Karoo: Critical Legal and Environmental Perspectives with Jan Glazewski.
