Brief Biography (English)

Dr Bernadine Nsa Ekpenyong is an academic, editor and a researcher with wealth of experiences in teaching, conducting and supervising research. She has a background and specialisation in Optometry and Public Health Epidemiology with a focus on quantitative research and bio-statistics. Dr Ekpenyong has about twenty-five years of cognate experience in Optometry, inclusive of fifteen years in the field of Public Health as an epidemiologist and a senior lecturer in the Department of Public Health, University of Calabar, Nigeria. She started her academic career as a Lecturer II in the Department of Ophthalmology, University of Calabar, before she was transferred to the Department of Public Health, University of Calabar in 2012. She was promoted to the rank of Senior Lecturer in 2016. Dr Ekpenyong was awarded a Doctor of Optometry degree by the Abia State University, Uturu, Nigeria in 1994, MPH and PhD degrees in Public Health Epidemiology by the University of Calabar in 2005 and 2016 respectively. She is the new Head, Department of Public Health, University of Calabar.

Dr Ekpenyong's main areas of research include; School eye health/school health programmes, Optometry and vision science, community health, drivers vision, epidemiology of communicable and non-communicable diseases, public health, reproductive health, maternal and child health, environmental health. She is presently a fellow of the Nigeria Post Graduate College of Optometry (FNCO) in Public Health Optometry and a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry (FAAO). As a researcher, Dr Ekpenyong has been accorded a number of awards and grants both locally and abroad as principal investigator and co-investigator. Her PhD research proposal attracted funding from the African Vision Research Institute (AVRI) South Africa, while the Tertiary University Education Trust Fund funded her fellowship research for the award of fellow of the Nigerian College of Optometrists. She has successfully supervised eight master’s degree thesis and has two PhD students. In addition to the above, in her many years as a researcher, she has developed a wealth of leadership skills working in different positions which have been vital to the success of her projects and endeavours

Dr Ekpenyong has served as examinations officer in the Department of Ophthalmology and Public Health. She is presently serving the Nigerian Post Graduate College of Optometrists as Chair of the Faculty of Public Health Optometry. She also occupied the position of the Coordinator of Center of Excellence in Research and Training in Human Resources for Health at the University of Calabar. As the Coordinator of Center of Excellence, she attracted two funding opportunities from World Health Organisation and Population Council.

As the current Chairman of the Public Health Optometry Committee of the Nigerian Optometric Association, she initiated and led the first national eye survey conducted by the Nigerian Optometric Association on drivers’ vision. Dr Ekpenyong was appointed Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the Nigerian Optometric Association in 2016 till date. She is also the director of a new research group made up of renowned African researchers in eye and public health across the globe, African Public Health and Eye Research Initiative (APERI), affiliated with African Vision Research Institute (AVRI) South Africa and the University of Calabar, Nigeria. She is a member of African Transitional Research group. Dr Ekpenyong is a certified Publons reviewer, and she reviews for many journals. She has collaborated with other researchers to conduct quality research. These efforts are evident on the several scientific presentations and peer-reviewed publications she has to her credit. She has attended many local and international conferences where she made presentations.
