Professor Raymond Durrheim (PhD, Witwatersrand, 1990) holds the South African Research Chair in Exploration, Earthquake and Mining Seismology at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. He is Co-Director of the AfricaArray research and capacity-building program, which conducts research and builds capacity to support the metals, minerals, energy, geohazards, and geodynamics sectors throughout the continent.
Prof Durrheim was Co-Leader of the Japanese-South African collaborative project "Observational studies in South African Mines to mitigate seismic risks" (2010-2015) and is a principal investigator of the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) project “Drilling into seismogenic zones of M2.0 – M5.5 earthquakes from deep South African gold mines” (DSeis, 2016-present).
He is the Author or Co-Author of 120 refereed articles published in journals, conference proceedings and books. Prof Durrheim is also the Co-Author of the paper that received the Society of Exploration Geophysics award for the best paper published in Geophysics in 2012. He received the South African Geophysical Association's (SAGA) Meritorious Service Award in 2010 and the Krahmann Medal in 2015.
