Dr. Roger Deane is an associate professor at the University of Pretoria. He completed his doctorate at the University of Oxford and returned to South Africa after being awarded Square Kilometre Array postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Cape Town and Rhodes University. He then moved to the University of Pretoria where he established the astronomy research group in 2018. His research interests cover a broad range of energy and spatial scales, from diffuse neutral hydrogen in galaxies to the inner accretion disks of supermassive black holes, using the power of next-generation radio telescopes such as South Africa’s MeerKAT radio telescope (the precursor to the Square Kilometre Array) and the Event Horizon Telescope.
