Prof Chegou leads a diagnostic research laboratory, which is part of the larger Stellenbosch University Immunology Research Group, based in the Division of Molecular Biology & Human Genetics, Department of Biomedical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, at Stellenbosch University. He was trained as a Medical Laboratory Scientist at the University of Buea, in Cameroon, before completing his postgraduate studies in the TB field. His research work mainly focuses on the immunology of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. He is currently working on biomarkers for the diagnosis of tuberculosis disease, biomarkers of protective immunity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and biomarkers for monitoring of the response to tuberculosis treatment amongst others. He is particularly interested in the development of point-of-care diagnostics and works on both pulmonary and extrapulmonary TB, and in both adults and children. His group also conducts research using animal models.
