Brief Biography (English)

Dr Lazarus Chapungu is a university lecturer and consultant of Geography and Environmental Science with 15 years of research experience and interest in climate change impacts, adaptation and mitigation as well as sustainable development. He served as a chapter scientist, contributing author and glossary editor at the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)’s AR6 Chapter 2 working group III. He is currently affiliated with the University of South Africa, Exxaro Chair in Climate and Sustainability Transitions, with key responsibilities of research and PhD student supervision. He has published extensively on climate change and presented at various international conferences. His current research focus is on Just and sustainability transitions in Africa.

Dr Chapungu is also active in the development sector where he translates theories into practical realities to transform communities, serving as the Vice Chair of the programs committee of the board of directors at the Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC), a non-governmental organization that, among other objectives, works to build community resilience to climate change and enable recovery from man-made and natural disasters. He holds a PhD in Environmental Science, a Master’s degree in Environmental Policy and Planning as well a professional diploma in Applied Monitoring and Evaluation. He also holds a project management professional certificate from the University of Pretoria. He has reviewed several journal articles and PhD and MSc theses in the fields of climate change and environmental science.
