Brief Biography (English)

Dr Zamani Cele is a postdoctoral fellow in the Biopolymer Modification and Therapeutics team of Dr Mohammed Balogun at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). As the lead chemist of the team he conduct, participate and offer support for all chemistry related research. His research track record demonstrate a strong commitment to interdisciplinary work in order to tackle complex problem. During his Master’s and PhD studies, he worked on the field of asymmetric synthesis, using both chiral metal complexes and small molecules (organocatalysis) as catalyst. This is an important field in organic/medicinal chemistry as it offers an ability to synthesize single enantiomers of molecules since biological systems, where they are intended for application, are also chiral. Different enantiomers often interact with the target biological receptors very differently and often with different responses. His work resulted in a number of publications in a reputable number of journals and an opportunity to work for the CSIR.
