Dr Bitrus is a lecturer in the Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Jos, Plateau, Nigeria. He is also the Director of Education and Training at the African Institute of One Health Research and Diagnostics (AIOHRD), where he is in charge of planning, organizing, management. Dr Bitrus in charge of executing the institute’s short training course progammes, seminars, workshops and conferences for both local and foreign participants. The institute also trains participants on proposal writing and financial management skills.
Dr Bitrus received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from the University of Maiduguri, Borno, Nigeria, and PhD (Bacteriology) from the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). Between 2017 to 2018, he attended Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand, as a post-doctoral research fellow at the Research unit in Microbial Food Safety and Antimicrobial Resistance. He also worked at MaiGoje Foundation as a Program Officer, coordinating the 2018/2019 FAO-UN Livestock Restocking cycle in Yobe State, Nigeria.
Dr Bitrus was a recipient of the best poster presentation award by the Malaysian Society of Microbiology (MSM) and a second prize best Poster presentation award in molecular biology by the American Society of Microbiology and Malaysian Society for Microbiology during his PhD scholarship.
Dr Bitrus has served as the Pioneer Public relations officer of the American Society of Microbiology, Malaysia student chapter, and the Faculty Veterinary Medicine postgraduate student representative during the visit by the Australasian Board council. He attended several international workshops, seminars, and conferences and has featured in more than ninety (90) published articles at both international and local journals. His latest published article is titled “Prevalence, Antimicrobial resistance, virulence genes and class 1 integrons of Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus faecalis from pigs, pork and humans in Thai-Laos border provinces”
Dr Bitrus was also involved in the development of a strategic framework for the control of priority zoonotic disease: Anthrax and Brucellosis sponsored by Global Implementation Solutions (GIS) in collaboration with African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET), Nigerian Center for Disease Control (NCDC), and Nigerian Field Epidemiology Network (NFELTP) from 9th to 13th September 2019 at Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, Nigeria. He has served as a reviewer for many highly-cited peer-review journals.
