Djillali Benouar is a Professor of Earthquake Engineering and Disaster Risk Management and Director of research at the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the University Of Science And Technology Houari Boumediene (USTHB) in Algeria.
He obtained his PhD at Imperial College London, a public research university in London, UK. Prof Benouar obtained his Master's Degree at Stanford University, California (USA), and did his postdoctoral studies at the University of Tokyo (Japan). He is a Founding Member of the Algerian Academy of Sciences and Technologies (AAST). Prof Benouar is Editor in Chief of the Oxford Research Encyclopedia Natural Hazards Science. He received two international awards for his research work from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and Thomson Reuters.
Prof Benouar has published 45 publications in internationally reputed journals and has over 100 papers in international conferences. He is a Member of the Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR) Science Committee, a Member of the Algerian Hazards Network (AHNet), a Member of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) Arab Coordination Mechanism for Disaster Risk Reduction, a Member of the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) Arab Partnership for Disaster Risk Reduction, a Member of the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) Expert Group of the Global Risk Assessment Framework (GRAF), and a Member of the Arab-Science and Technology Advisory Group for Disaster Risk reduction (Ar-STAG) to the League of Arab states.
Prof Benouar is also the Chair of the Africa Science and Technology Advisory Group for Disaster Risk reduction (Af-STAG) to the African Union and a Partner of the Periperi U (Partners Enhancing Resilience to People Exposed to Risks), an African Consortium of 12 universities and an ICoE of the Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR) program.
