Dr Marion Bamford is a Professor in Palaeobotany and is the Director of the Evolutionary Studies Institute, University of the Witwatersrand. She was awarded her doctorate from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1990. Fossil leaves, stems, seeds pollen and phytoliths from the Permian through to the Holocene form the basis of her research interest with an emphasis on fossil woods. She is a co-director of the Olduvai Landscape and Palaeoanthropology Project in Tanzania and is involved in other research projects on hominin and archaeological sites in Kenya, Ethiopia, and South Africa. She has published over 100 journal papers. She is a member of several professional bodies/associations such as the Palaeontological Society of Southern Africa, the Southern African Quaternary Association, the International Association of Wood Anatomists, and the International Organization of Palaeobotany. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of South Africa.
