Brief Biography (English)

Paul Baki is a Professor of Physics at the Technical University of Kenya and a Fellow of the Kenya National Academy of Sciences. He is a Member of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and the East African Astronomical Society, among others.

Prof Baki has Published over 50 peer-reviewed papers and Supervised many Masters and PhD students in space physics and astrophysics. He is a Member of the United Nations Committee on Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNCOPUOS) Expert Group C: Long Term Sustainability of Outer Space Activities (2013- to date). Prof Baki contributes to the development of space policies in the domain of space weather and the sustainability of outer space activities at technical and scientific committees.

He is a Member of the African Union Working Group on Space Policy & Space Strategy (2012- to date). Prof Baki contributed to the development of the African Space Strategy and Space Strategy ( adopted by AU General Assembly in January 2016); and the Development of Statutes for the African Space Agency (adopted by AU General Assembly in January 2018). He is now assisting the African Union Commission with the development of an organizational structure for the African Space Agency.

He was a Member of the Special Committee on the Development of a Road Map on University Education, Research and Innovation, State Department of University Education, Ministry of Education, Kenya (April 5- May 30, 2020). In 2017, Prof Baki was the Chairman of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology, State Department of University Education, Ministry of Education - Science, Technology, and Innovation Sector Working Group on Medium Term Plan (2018- 2022); Member (2014- 2015): National Commission for Science Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI), Committee on Strategy for Establishment of the National Physical Sciences Research Laboratory (NPSRL); Chairman (2012- 2014): Committee on Kenya Space Policy, National Council for Science and Technology; Chairman (2012- 2017): Inter-ministerial Technical Committee ( Kenya) on the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) - world’s largest Radio Telescope to be built in Africa & Australia and African Very Long Baseline Interferometry Project (AVN); Member (2011- to date): Governing Council of the Kenya National Academy of Sciences (2011- to date); Director, School of Physical Sciences and Technology (2013- 2019); Associate Dean, School of Pure and Applied Sciences, Kenya Polytechnic University College, Kenya (2011- 2013).
