Dr Graham Avery is trained as a Stone Age archaeologist. He worked at Iziko South African Museum in Cape Town, South Africa, until retirement in 2012.

His research focus is on Quaternary and Holocene archaeozoology, taphonomy and palaeoecology, including birds, shell middens and mammals.

Dr Avery's current position is Iziko Emeritus Associate. He studies modern and Pleistocene hyaena, small carnivore and raptor prey remains as well as bone accumulations. Dr Avery undertakes Quaternary palaeontological and archaeological impact assessments and heritage resource monitoring.
