Montaz Ali currently is Professor at the School of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics (CSAM), University of the Witwatersrand. He is also an Associate Faculty at AIMS (African Institute for Mathematical Sciences), in Muizenberg, Cape Town.

Prof Ali does Research in Global Optimization, Optimal Control, Operations Research, Statistics and Applied Mathematics.

He is a Member of a mine planning optimization and valuation research group, University of the Witwatersrand and a Member of the South African Mathematical Society. Prof Ali was a Member of the international scientific panel, Optimization and Systems Engineering Research Group, ABO Akademi University, Turku, Finland, 2012-2016.

In 2017 he was rated B3 by the National Research Foundation (NRF).
