As an early career scientist with a keen interest in the broader field of Pharmaceutical Microbiology and Bioinformatics (Microbial Genome Data Analysis), Dr Alayande focused his research activities on solving problems around antimicrobial resistance profiling of pathogens and development of biopharmaceuticals against infectious diseases. He started by exploring bioactive principles of plant origins due to their reduced side effects and ease of accessibility in providing folklore remedy. Thereafter, looking at the devastating effect of the in-feed and sub-therapeutic antibiotics, as growth promoters in animal husbandry on public health, it became necessary to urgently seek better and viable alternatives. This, therefore, informed his interest in the probiotic investigation. He has also extended his research activities to encompass other important sources of bioactive agents of natural origins (bioactive peptides), these include lactic acid bacteria and endophytes.
Besides direct laboratory activities, Dr Alayande is a certified Data and Software Carpentry Instructor in the African community. This involves an international team of volunteers, dedicated to equipping the academic researchers with the computational skills on how to analyze big data and get more research done in less time with less pain.
