Dr Akpan Samuel Nsikan is a veterinary epidemiologist and early career researcher with expertise in One Health.
A PhD candidate (One Health) at Wageningen University & research (WUR), in the Netherlands; he holds a doctoral fellowship at the Institute of Genomics & Global Health (IGH), Nigeria, and is also a Graduate fellow at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), Kenya.
A 2021 alumnus of the sustainability centre of the prestigious Lagos Business School (LBS) Nigeria, he has received the 2017 Africa Young Water and Sanitation Professionals research grant for an innovative study he designed on antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) from water sources in Southwestern Nigeria, funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). He is also a recipient of the Alliance Doctoral Fellowship funded by the government of Germany through the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). In 2024, he emerged a winner of the Global One Health Special Prize instituted for young people (below 40 years) with innovative research solutions to promote the health of all species globally.
His work experience cuts across clinical practice, field epidemiology & research, working in national and international organizations such as the World Bank Regional Disease Surveillance Systems Enhancement (REDISSE), Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC/FMARD), and the non-profit sector.
He integrates ecology, epidemiology and genomic tools for a better understanding and control of emerging zoonotic infectious diseases. His current research investigates the human health risks associated with wild meat in the African metropolitan cities of Nairobi (Kenya) and Lagos (Nigeria).
Dr Akpan is a lecturer at the department of Veterinary Public Health & Preventive Medicine at Joseph Tarka University (formerly Federal University of Agriculture), Makurdi, Nigeria.
