Brief Biography (English)

Dr Muiz Akinyemi is a seasoned microbiologist with expertise in molecular microbiology, food safety, microbe-microbe interactions, mycotoxicology, and probiotics. He has contributed to the generation of high-quality surveillance data on microbiota and mycotoxins in Nigerian food through cutting-edge research using high-throughput sequencing and LC-MS/MS technology, respectively. This has led to the identification of the underlying factors that contribute to the short shelf life and high spoilage susceptibility of cereals and dairy products, as well as the recent increase in mycotoxin occurrence in Nigerian staple foods. Currently, he is using polyphasic characterisation to investigate the diversity and taxonomy of food- and soil-borne microbes in Nigeria and South Africa. To this effect, he has contributed to the global fungal biodiversity database through the collection of one novel Fusarium specie.
