Brief Biography (English)

Dr Pedro Miguel dos Santos Abrantes conducts his Research at the Maternal Endogenous Infections Studies (MEnIS) laboratories, Department of Medical BioScience, University of the Western Cape, South Africa. His research interests include the drug resistance and biofilm formation of medically important organisms in at-risk population groups, nosocomial infections and the testing of potential therapeutic agents from synthetic and natural sources.

Dr Abrantes completed a PhD in Medical Bioscience from UWC in 2014, followed by two Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in his research field. Due to his interest in Teaching and Learning, he also studied towards a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Education at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, graduating with Merit in 2019.

He acted as an exam moderator for the Oral Microbiology and Immunology module given to M.Ch.D (Master of Dental Surgery) students and supervises Honours and Masters Medical Biosciences students. He has also been involved in UWC’s Teaching programmes since 2008, having lectured Oral Hygiene, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing and Medical Biosciences students from 1st to 3rd year level. He currently Teaches/Coordinates Medical Microbiology modules to 3rd year Science and Dentistry students at the University of the Western Cape.

Dr Abrantes is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK), has received various awards from scientific bodies (including the International Society of Chemotherapy for Infection and Cancer, the Coimbra Group of Universities and the Asia Pacific Foundation for Infectious Diseases), publishes in respected peer-reviewed journals and presents his research in local and international conferences.
