Background and concept
To many in government, industry, business and civil society, the concepts, language, acronyms and details surrounding green finance for South Africa’s decarbonisation future are intimidating and confusing.
Issues that remain obscure and unclear to many include the just energy transition, carbon budgets, national determined contributions, sectoral emission targets, energy planning instruments, decarbonisation financing, decarbonisation incentives, carbon taxes, carbon border adjustment mechanisms and international renewable energy certificates, to name a few.
EE Business Intelligence is therefore hosting a webinar intended to demystify, clarify and explain green finance mechanisms in a way that clarifies the options and demystifies the subject.
The webinar will unpack intimidating concepts around green finance mechanisms without the heavy jargon, making the subject matter both understandable and more accessible, with explanations that provide a pathway through the dense forest of information.
Synopsis
As South Africa embarks on its Just Energy Transition, ensuring access to sustainable and affordable financing is crucial to accelerating decarbonisation efforts. This webinar will explore the diverse funding mechanisms – both foreign and domestic – available to support the transition to a low-carbon economy.
The webinar will begin by unpacking the key funding streams for decarbonisation, including carbon financing and green financing, and their role in making clean energy technologies viable. The discussion will then examine how these financing mechanisms intersect with Just Energy Transition financing to ensure equitable and inclusive energy system transformation.
A key focus will be Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, which introduces new carbon market mechanisms essential for South Africa’s transition. Experts will clarify the differences between Article 6.2 and 6.4, highlighting how Mitigation Activity Design Documents (MADDs) pave the way for accessing international funding.
Additionally, the session will explore decarbonisation currencies—including carbon credits (reduction, removal and avoidance), International Renewable Energy Certificates (IRECs), and carbon trading – to clarify their role in carbon markets and how businesses can leverage these instruments to drive sustainability.
Join us for this insightful discussion where financial experts, policymakers, and industry leaders will break down the evolving landscape of green financing and provide practical insights into securing funding for South Africa’s Just Energy Transition.
Format
This will be a 2¼ hour webinar conducted on the Zoom Webinar 1000 platform, which can accommodate up to 1000 concurrent participants/attendees.
An invited VIP will provide an opening address to contextualise the topics. Thereafter, three expert presenters will each have 20-minute slots to present on various aspects of the subject of the webinar, followed by a 40-minute open discussion and Q & A session.
